Description

For your consideration is this double 5-ball spadroon of the 1790’s-1810’s. The blade displays the typical gilded etchings of that era, and there’s a little bit of bluing left as well. A fuller runs down the entire length of it in true
spadroon fashion. The end of the blade is quite worn down, and shows some grind marks. It may also originally have been entirely blued as opposed to 1/3 its length like most other decorated sword blades from that general time frame - there’s a large blued section from the tip going up several inches that doesn’t have the unmistakable stench of modern chemical blue. Also the blade has been bent in a couple areas, “Double 5-ball” guard is of a kind that was fashionable c.1790-1810, “single 5-ball” guards were used for a longer time, up to c.1840. The grip & pommel look like they are replacements, probably from a Horstmann M1840 NCO or Musician’s Sword. I’m thinking Horstmann instead of Ames or some other manufacturer because the pommel is spherical. The Ames NCO/Musician has more of an ovoid shape to the pommel. All in all this is an older “Frankensword” made with parts from at least 2 old and relatively rare swords. Can also be harvested for parts without too much guilt since it’s already been established that this piece isn’t entirely original. Perfect for somebody who wants to restore an old eagle pommel or pillow pommel sword with a broken guard or somebody who has just the blade for a Horstmann M1840.
