Aesthetic Figural Medallion Sterling Fruit Bowl Browne & Spaulding 1869

Description

Amazing figural American fruit bowl from Browne & Spaulding New York using a mark from only 1869-1871. This fruit bowl is 8.5 inches in diameter (bowl only), 11 inches in diameter from bee to bee. To the rim of the bowl is 5.75 inches and 8 inches to the top of the finials on the handles. The fruit bowl sits flat on a table. One of the handles leans inwards slightly, but you really have to look closely. A silversmith could fix this easily and also finish the hand polishing.
The diameter of the base is 5.25 inches with a repetition of 4 beaded borders. The handles begin as arrows under the bowl and rise up to ball mounted finials. There is a period monogram “PLC” on one side and a period year date 1869. The stars of the bowl are the highly detailed bee medallions on either side of the handles. The bees are 1.25 inches long with wings spread 1 inch. The height of fashion for a wealthy family in the years following the Civil War.
