Description
General Service buttons of this type were typically used on infantry fatigue uniforms. The ones used in the summer look like white pajamas. They were in service from 1808 until 1830. It is a coat button, 19 mm in diameter. Pewter buttons, a combination of lead and tin, were easily cast due to the metal’s low melting point. They were also relatively cheap to produce. Another plus was that the finished buttons were bright silver in color and shiny like real silver. Pewter is a hard and strong alloy, but is does not fare well in the acid soils of the south. This example shows none of the “crumbling” edges typical of some dug pewter buttons. It is a water find. This example will make a nice addition to any collection. This button is from my personal collection, but it’s time to pass them on.
