    Description

This is an Infantry officer's sword of the pattern of 1796, with a brilliantly blue and gold blade. It is stamped "Bruxelles" on the edge of the guard, which is interesting, as Brussels was Dutch at the time this sword was most likely made, although just a year or so earlier it was Austrian, and of course it was also under French control soon thereafter. The likelihood is that this was made for a Dutch officer, or was exported to Britain. It is a beautiful example of this sword, although it is without scabbard. The blade is beautifully blue and gold decorated, and retains most of its original finish. The letters "E.M." appear in a gold band above the ricasso. The blade has trophies of arms, and branches of leaves. The blued portion ends in an unusually fancy flourish. The bright portion of the blade is extremely clean and excellent. The sword is 37 1/2inches long overall, with the blade being 31 1/2 inches long. This sword came from the collection of Peter J. Buxtun, and was on display by him for many years.
