ca. 1880 Chromolithograph Trade Card "Winter Greeting" from Domestic Sewing Machine Co. depicting a lovely Winter scene: house in the woods, a mother and daughter walking. So idyllic. It is in excellent condition, with little to no surface damage, edge or corner wear. The chromolithograph illustration is beautiful, very colorful, and serene. Very rare and fascinating "ca. 1880 Chromolithograph Trade Card "Winter Greeting" from Domestic Sewing Machine Co.."
The extraordinary Trade Card measures approx. 4-1/2 by 3" (12 cm X 8 cm.) This trade card depicts a lovely Winter scene, with a house in the woods … smoke coming out of the chimney, and a mother and daughter going for a walk. Ah. Wouldn't be nice if Winter was always this idyllic.
This wonderful and original "ca. 1890 Chromolithograph Trade Card" is in excellent condition, with little to no surface damage, edge or corner wear. The chromolithograph illustration is beautiful, very colorful, and serene. The back of the card is blank, except for glue residue, and a pencil mark. (See the photos above.)
Two partners, N. S. Perkins and William Mack formed the Domestics Sewing Machine Co. near the end of the American Civil War. Their first sewing machine was made in 1864. During their height the Domestic Sewing Machine Co made sewing machines for themselves and Grover & Baker. By 1872 they were manufacturing nearly 50,000 machines a year.
The Sears Roebuck & Co sold many of the Domestic machines under their brand name of the Minnesota, The company prospered for decades. White's took over the firm in 1924, but the Depression Era of the 1930's did them in.
Chances are that they gave these cards to their customers just to help them keep their company in their minds. Lots of people collected Trade Cards in those days and stored them in scrapbooks. Companies took advantage of that custom, and combined their gift with a little bit of advertising.
Delightful and unique, the "ca. 1880 Chromolithograph Trade Card "Winter Greeting" from Domestic Sewing Machine Co.," is a wonderful example Chromolithography of the time, and would be a fantastic addition to any Victorian era collection!!!
