Description
The War of 1812 has widely come to be viewed as the second American "War of Independence". It saw impressment banished from the high seas, forced the British to finally evacuate Fort Detroit and the Old Northwest, ended British claims on the Louisiana Purchase, and ensured American control of the Mississippi due to Jackson's stunning victory at New Orleans. In the early 1800s, the nascent US edged weapon industry had not yet caught up to skilled European cutlers, and most, but not all, American officer's swords of the period were imported from well known English, French, and German makers, and offered for private purchase through military outfitters in New York and other Eastern cities. These swords featured an elegant "eagle pommel" design, which quickly became symbolic of the post-colonial "Federal period". US eagle pommel swords of the early 19th century have been of great interest to collectors for decades, leading E. Andrew Mowbray to write an authoritative reference book on the subject in 1988, reprinted in a second edition in 1997. This "AMERICAN EAGLE POMMEL SWORD" US WAR OF 1812 OFFICER SABER REFERENCE BOOK is in near mint, unread condition, with only some light scattered storage wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the book is in near mint shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it boasts an elegantly illustrated dust jacket over hardcovers, and sports 232 pages full of descriptive text, period pictures, and photographs (almost all black and white, though a few in color near the end) of English, French, German, and American made US Army and Navy eagle pommel swords of the period 1794-1830, broken down by the maker's style of eagle, with a strong emphasis on handle materials, hilt construction, blade etching, and company and importer histories, as well as a plethora of other invaluable information.
